Exploiting Your Technical Skills "Guru" or "Nerd" ?

Those who are most comfortable working within strict guidelines, and who do not wish to manage people or sell to them, should consider careers as 'technicians'.  This does not mean that if you are not comfortable inter-acting with people that you should start learning how to wire up a light switch.  Broadly speaking, anyone who is simply following procedures laid down by someone else, whether it be the highly paid barrister, a senior partner in an accounting practice, or a refuse disposal engineer, is a technician.  This statement is not intended as a derogatory slur on those citizens who devote their lives to urban cleanliness, but is made in recognition that some are better at adhering to set guidelines than other.  These individuals are just as necessary, and sometimes more essential, than those who often steal the limelight from the management or sales/ marketing divisions.  Certainly many would not argue with this assessment when a company is selling a product or service on the strength of its technical superiority.  However, there is a danger that the focused mind of the technical guru, may not be in tune with market perceptions that are not easily quantified and which could be more important in determining the future of that particular business.
