About In Search Of Common Sense

Why you should explore this web-site !

With the volume of information available to us today, there is no excuse for not taking the time to make informed decisions on subjects that are important to us and that impact on those around us.  We all have to make choices but some of us will continue to suffer long-term 'pain', or worse still inflict it on others, because we insist on ignoring the information available to us or because we insist on seeking short-term gain, albeit for good and perhaps laudable reasons.  Whether you choose to explore this site further and perhaps seek objective thoughts of others on some of the issues that currently concern you, or you simply wish to assume that your instinctive rationale is automatically correct, is your choice.  If you decide to explore this site further in your personal search  of a 'common sense' perspective please do not forget the words of Theodore Isaac Rubin, "Kindness is more important than wisdom, and the recognition of this is the beginning of wisdom".

Background to the creation of this web-site !

This web site is independent of any major media or political grouping and is not subject to editorial restriction or censorship other than objective comment provided by members of the public contributing to it.  Initial comments, opinions and suggestions are based on the writings of Andrzej Aleksander who as an international business development manager lived and worked in many countries and interacted at different levels with people of many different cultural backgrounds.  Neither a psychologist nor a psychiatrist, he has been a keen observer of his fellow human and his/her actions.  He notes, as many have noted, what works well for one individual, or family, does not necessarily work well for another, and generalizations should be avoided.

There are, however, actions common to all cultures that appear to increase the prospects of a balanced life that is in harmony with the lives of those around us.  Conversely, there are also actions common to all cultures that appear to increase the prospects of short or long-term conflict, and disharmony within our families or with our neighbors or even between neighboring states.  'Common sense actions', ie actions that are sensible, sound and practical, may be obvious to some but forever remain a mystery to others.

This web site was created to provide a simple structure for gaining balanced input to the decisions that all of us consider in endeavoring to take the objective actions we think best for the long-term health and welfare of those we love.  This input is provided under topics that are grouped according to the major stages of the human life cycle, and each topic includes pertinent observations and suggestions.  You are invited to explore this site as a reference, and if you feel inclined, to contribute to it, either by suggesting appropriate changes, or additions, or by proposing new topics, with or without relevant text.  You are also encouraged to pose questions relating to any of the subjects covered at this web site.  All pertinent questions will be answered while we endeavor to work with you to extend our common sense platform from which to make wisely balanced decisions.

A regular feature of this web site will be the 'Big Issue' relating to a currently topical subject about which a 'Common Sense Opinion' will be expressed.  You will be invited to register your agreement or disagreement with this opinion, or to provide your own suggestion regarding the 'Big Issue'.

Thoughts to ponder on while exploring this web-site !

"The gusting wind was pounding John's body as he tottered, helplessly trying to balance on the quivering wire strung far above the contrasting scenes below.

The bedlam issuing from his left spiraled up from narrow twisted corridors of white but blood-spattered walls, hidden behind a towering parapet of gray cement and foreboding barbed wire.  Beyond the cacophony of pained shrieks and delirious howls of laughter, the faint sound of a monotonously beating drum could just be heard, suggesting a distant but welcoming peace.

On John's right, the gently meandering stream below was again dominated by a daunting wall, but in dramatic contrast with the one opposite, this structure was adorned with enormous brightly colored murals and reliefs of joyous participants in various leisure, sporting and sexual activities. Behind this splendid work of art, rows of seemingly endless and identical corridors were silent save for the incessant shuffling of the broken feet of those survivors who performed, like robotic zombies, their sixteen hour programmed daily work routines, interrupted only be eight hours of dreamless and unfitful sleep."

From the cradle to the grave we are all faced with making decisions that potentially could have a huge impact on the lives of many people, as well as on our own lives and the lives of the ones we love.  Perhaps increasingly, as modern training techniques and technology play larger roles in our lives, we are less well equipped to make balanced judgments as to which are the most suitable paths to follow in raising our children, building relationships with others, and achieving broadly successful lives.  Will the decisions we make today produce the desired long-term results?
